Caldes d'Estrac is a coastal town along the Maresme region (Barcelona). Its history goes back to the thirteenth century, built around an old hospital and a church. The site of a hot spring, was named to the municipality. From 1870 to 1920, underwent a first golden age, being a resort of the Catalan bourgeoisie. Catalans important poets and writers as Apel · les Mestres, Joan Maragall, Verdaguer Jacint and Josep Palau i Fabre, lived in the municipality. Although it is considered that the diminutive of Caldetes, (applied especially to the maritime district or vila nova) was born in the eighteenth century, the name was already used by 1600 in the Geography of Catalunya Pere Gil. During the Spanish Civil War, Caldetes, was considered an open city, having several embassies in the municipality, which meant it could not be bombed. |
